Montegranaro is a municipality with more than 13,000 inhabitants in the province of Fermo. The village is located 13 km northwest of the provincial capital, 45 kilometers south of Ancona and about 12 km southeast of Macerata. Montegranaro was built on the remains of the ancient Roman city Veregra (or Beregra). The city was first mentioned in a deed of donation of the Abbey of Farfa. The name comes from the Latin Mons Granarius (grain hill). From this it follows that the region was very fertile in early times. Today Montegranaro is also known as an important location of the Italian footwear industry.
