The medieval village of Acquaviva Picena grew around the carefully preserved C13 Fortress which was once the home of the Dukes of Acquaviva. Historical and artistic treasures are to be found everywhere as you wander through the narrow cobbled streets. The churches of Acquaviva, including ‘San Rocco’ (C13), ‘San Nicolo’ and ‘San Francesco’, range from simply decorated to highly ornate. The Clocktower overlooks the Piazza San Nicolo where the summer markets are held. The village retains many of its cultural traditions including the Palio del Duca Matrimonio, a procession and feast in medieval costume that takes place in the heart of the castle and involves the entire village. In this charmingly typical Italian region the locals still make bread, pasta, woven baskets and wine as they have done for centuries.
